Use this technique when you need to eliminate more than one or two stitches at the begining of a single row, or instead of holding stiches on waste yarn to bind them off later.

 

To eliminate a stitch at the beginning of a row, creating a smooth, slanted edge, use a decrease.
To add a stitch at the beginning of a row, creating a smooth, slanted edge, use an increase.
